HWE 2 What is our role as a citizen? The Declaration of Independence explains a citizen’s role as, â€Å"Individual rights refer to the liberties of each individual to pursue life and goals without interference from other individuals or the government.† But what happens when the rights given to us are not protected as stated in the Declaration of Independence? The result is dissatisfaction in our communities which leads to people taking a stand. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham jail talks about this problem and why he has the right to protest. According to the Declaration of Independence, Americans have the right to over throw the government if the government fails to protect their rights as citizen. Therefore, Martin Luther King’s jailing for the protests in Birmingham violates the Declaration of Independence and demonstrates why as citizens it is our obligation to stand up for our rights even in the face of the government. The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson in 1776.The document describes why the Thirteen Colonies of North America declared independence from Great Britain. The document talks about how the Colonist felt as if Great Britain form of government had become tyrannical. Jefferson states his thesis several times in the document. His thesis is that the colonists have the right to be independent and they are asserting their rights to ask for freedom.
